The Constitution
The Standard
What MAMMA MAFIA promises to protect in this room.
The room is governed. The woman is not.
The principle
Nothing here should require a woman to surrender her discernment in order to belong.
MAMMA MAFIA exists to make more room for conscious choice, not to issue another set of instructions about how a woman should live.
We do not decide what a good life looks like for her.
We protect the conditions in which she can hear herself, consider what she knows, seek what she does not, and choose.
Her choice may look traditional or unconventional. It may mean staying, leaving, depending on someone, standing alone, changing her mind or beginning again.
The form of the life is hers. Our concern is whether she has meaningful room to choose it.
Fear is not a feature of love. Where fear is what holds an arrangement together, something other than love is doing the work.
The test
What happens when the answer is no?
That question does not decide anybody's life. It exposes the conditions around a choice, and it applies to a marriage, a family, an employer, a community, and to us.
A yes means very little when no is not genuinely available.
Consent requires room to refuse. Belonging requires room to disagree. Support requires room to choose differently from the person offering it. Advice requires room to ignore it.
A relationship can hold responsibility, compromise, sacrifice and consequence without becoming coercive.
The line is crossed when fear, punishment, threat, humiliation or dependency is used as leverage to obtain compliance.
Compliance is not consent.
What we are obliged to do
POWER
Power exists everywhere. Parents have power. Partners may hold different forms of power. Money creates power. Knowledge creates power. Institutions have power. Communities have power.
MAMMA MAFIA will hold power too.
The measure is not whether power can produce compliance. It is what power does when challenged.
- · Healthy power can hear no.
- · Healthy power can be questioned.
- · Healthy power accepts accountability.
BELONGING
A woman does not have to share our politics, spirituality, idea of womanhood or definition of a good life in order to belong.
She may disagree, change her mind, question us, and choose differently from the women beside her.
She does, however, have to meet the standards of conduct that protect other people in the room.
Freedom of thought does not remove responsibility for behaviour.
Belonging is not a reward for conformity.
SUPPORT
We do not fix a woman.
We do not decide what her experience means.
We do not tell her to leave, stay, forgive or try harder because that is what worked for somebody else.
We can offer care, evidence, perspective, experience, challenge, warning, practical help and witness.
Then we give her life back to her.
Support should increase her access to her own discernment, not replace it with ours.
SAFETY
We will never use privacy, loyalty or sisterhood to protect abuse, coercion, threats or violence.
We do not keep dangerous secrets to preserve the appearance of belonging.
We do not ask a woman to confront somebody when confrontation may make her less safe.
Where harm exceeds what a sisterhood can safely hold, we point toward the people trained to hold it.
Privacy matters.
Safety matters more than protecting the image of the room.
We do not confuse silence with peace.
INTIMACY
In spaces involving intimacy, bodies or relationships, we will not confuse compliance with consent.
The relevant question is whether a person was meaningfully free to choose, refuse, stop or change their mind.
Consent must have room for no, for not now, for I need more information, and for yes, freely given.
COMMERCE
Sisterhood is not a sales technique.
No seller earns entitlement to another woman's money because both belong here.
A woman may compare, question, decline, walk away, leave honest feedback and report misconduct.
Sister Biz exists to make women's work easier to find.
Supporting women does not require suspending discernment.
Not harder to refuse.
CONNECTION
No feature should turn access to women into pressure from women.
A member must be able to decline contact, disengage, block, report and change her mind without having to justify herself.
Connection should be offered freely.
Participation should not be extracted through guilt, pressure or fear of exclusion.
RESPONSIBILITY
Freedom is not exemption from consequence.
Sovereignty is not permission to harm.
A woman can be wrong.
She can act from fear, use a boundary to punish, use the language of care to control, or cause harm while believing she is protecting herself.
This Standard includes her too.
Accountability is not the opposite of freedom. It is part of it.
When a concern is raised about a woman
She is told the substance of what has been raised and given a meaningful chance to respond before a decision about her access is made.
Particular details may be withheld where sharing them would create a privacy or safety risk.
Where somebody's immediate safety requires action first, we act first and explain as soon as we safely can.
A decision is explained, not simply handed down.
If access is restricted or removed, she may ask within seven days for the decision to be reviewed once, by somebody who was not solely responsible for making it.
We will not remove a woman from this room by a judgment she never heard, under standards she was never shown, with no meaningful chance to answer.
The substance is not withheld.
When we cross the line
If you believe MAMMA MAFIA, a moderator, or somebody acting on our behalf has breached this Standard, you can raise it:
A concern involving a member of our team is never reviewed only by the person it concerns.
We will acknowledge your concern within seven business days.
We will give you an outcome or a meaningful update on the review within seven business days.
Where privacy or safety limits what we can share, we will say so rather than go quiet.
Raising a concern under this Standard will not, by itself, affect a woman's membership, access or standing in the sisterhood.
The Standard applies whether the concern involves a member, moderator, contractor, leader or MAMMA MAFIA itself.
The guardrail
We govern the room. We do not govern the woman.
We can set standards for conduct in our spaces.
We can intervene when those standards are breached.
We can remove access where safety, dignity or the integrity of the room requires it.
That is different from deciding what a woman should do with her life, and the distinction must stay clear as the sisterhood grows.
The day agreement becomes the price of belonging, we have crossed our own line.
The day concern becomes control, we have crossed it.
The day loyalty requires silence about harm, we have crossed it.
The day this philosophy becomes another approved way to be a woman, we have crossed it.
This Standard applies to us first.
The practice
Listen. Question. Discern. Choose.
Remain willing to look again.
Leave every woman stronger than you found her.
Not more dependent on our answers.
More able to hear her own.
MAMMA MAFIA is not your compass. You are.
